    A note on Neuberger's double pass algorithm

    We analyze Neuberger's double pass algorithm for the matrix-vector multiplication R(H).Y (where R(H) is (n-1,n)-th degree rational polynomial of positive definite operator H), and show that the number of floating point operations is independent of the degree n, provided that the number of sites is much larger than the number of iterations in the conjugate gradient. This implies that the matrix-vector product (H)−1/2Y≃R(n−1,n)(H)⋅Y (H)^{-1/2} Y \simeq R^{(n-1,n)}(H) \cdot Y can be approximated to very high precision with sufficiently large n, without noticeably extra costs. Further, we show that there exists a threshold nT n_T such that the double pass is faster than the single pass for n>nT n > n_T , where nT≃12−25 n_T \simeq 12 - 25 for most platforms.Comment: 18 pages, v3: CPU time formulas are obtained, to appear in Physical Review

    The effect of surface heterogeneity on cloud absorption estimates

    This study presents a systematic and quantitative analysis of the effect of inhomogeneous surface albedo on shortwave cloud absorption estimates. We used 3D radiative transfer modeling over a checkerboard surface albedo to calculate cloud absorption. We have found that accounting for surface heterogeneity enhances cloud absorption. However, the enhancement is not sufficient to explain the reported difference between measured and modeled cloud absorption

    Droplet Ripening in Concentration Gradients

    Living cells use phase separation and concentration gradients to organize chemical compartments in space. Here, we present a theoretical study of droplet dynamics in gradient systems. We derive the corresponding growth law of droplets and find that droplets exhibit a drift velocity and position dependent growth. As a consequence, the dissolution boundary moves through the system, thereby segregating droplets to one end. We show that for steep enough gradients, the ripening leads to a transient arrest of droplet growth that is induced by an narrowing of the droplet size distribution.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

    Analysis And Performance Of A Picosecond Dye Laser Amplifier Chain

    Design considerations are discussed for a simple, easy to use and relatively efficient high gain dye laser amplifier chain for CW mode-locked dye lasers. The amplifier boosts the output of a synchronously mode-locked dye laser to obtain ≈005 mj, ≤ 1 psec pulses over a ≈ 400 Å bandwidth. These pulses are suitable for efficient Raman Shifting, frequency mixing and continuum generation to vastly extend the spectral range of the system. Our amplifier is pumped by a frequency doubled Nd:YAG oscillator only, which longitudinally pumps three identical brewster cells with the same flowing dye solution in each. Contrary to popular belief, high small signal gains (≥ 105) are easily attained in a single stage with longitudinal pumping, with better beam homogeneity and easier alignment than transverse pumping. Gain saturation measurements are presented which agree well with calculations. Factors which relax the pump timing sensitivity are examined. The importance of gain saturation for both efficient amplification and for amplitude stability is also discussed. The need for isolated amplifier stages is stressed and optimal amplifier cell areas for a given stage are calculated

    The Lattice Free Energy with Overlap Fermions: A Two-Loop Result

    We calculate the 2-loop partition function of QCD on the lattice, using the Wilson formulation for gluons and the overlap-Dirac operator for fermions. Direct by-products of our result are the 2-loop free energy and average plaquette. Our calculation serves also as a prototype for further higher loop calculations in the overlap formalism. We present our results as a function of a free parameter M0M_0 entering the overlap action; the dependence on the number of colors NN and fermionic flavors NfN_f is shown explicitly.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures.
